MAN - SPIRIT SOUL AND BODY Part I
78It is of paramount importance for a biblical believer to understand who they really are.
As we know God formed man –Adam from the earth and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and Adam became a living soul.
The body of Adam was dead, or not living, just a material like a sculptor making something out of clay, before God breathed His spirit from Himself and man became a living person. Nobody in the world wise or unwise can describe the beginning of man’s life as the Bible did.
God created Adam’s body from the earth and gave to Adam spirit from Himself.
Here is the scripture, indicating the man is triune.
Man is created to the God’s image.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Man is a spirit, lives in a body (or house) and has a soul. The soul is the living function.
Without the spirit, man is dead. The soul stops to function and leaves with the spirit. Death is the separation from life. Spiritual death is separation from “zoe” Gods’ kind of life.
The separation from the life of God (zoe) occurred after eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Man stopped having contact and communication with God and was suddenly on his own. From revelation knowledge he came to a lower level of knowledge – reasoning. He was no longer full of knowledge as he used to be. He was dependent only on his five physical senses. Since he depended on sensing of his outside environment he was very limited, since all that we can see is subject to constant changes. Limitation also is based only on our visual field.
Still after sin Adam was much more intelligent as we are now.
Even though we have gained knowledge in the generations, since we still do not know even 1% of what actually exists. It is astronomical number what we do not know. We are very much dependant on theories and presumptions.
Man is a spirit; lives in the physical body and possesses a soul. The real man is the spirit man, not the body or the soul. Body without a spirit and a soul is dead and a spirit without a body is a disembodied spirit and leaves one way or another (to heaven or hell).
Jesus was one who lived and died and was raised. He is worthy and to be trusted and believed.
We are a spirit, not a soul or a body. We are not a body and then a spirit or a soul. We must keep the priority straight. We must remember this.
The spirit of a man is a component of God, part of God. The spirit after sin is like a spirit encased in a cement block until the Spirit of God quickens him at the same time of being born again. Man cannot be saved without that process. There is no other way to receive eternal life. It cannot be done by joining a church, having a good life or by baptism or anything else but by the Word of God and the Holy Spirit.
Man spirit is in our entire body, but the headquarters is the heart. It is not the anatomical heart but a place between the chest and the stomach.
The soul is a living function. The headquarters is in the head, but even the soul is everywhere where blood can reach.
The soul is part of the blood.
The soul is a computer. It is the best computer made by best creator – the Almighty God.
The soul has a thinking processor, a mind, a memory bank, and a decision-making will. The soul has emotions. It is also the switchboard between the external and internal world. It controls a huge amount of organs and functions we are not even aware of. The soul in brain has central nervous system and is connected with peripheral nervous system. Peripheral nervous system is system of five physical senses.
Please do not mix man’s spirit with the soul.
The soul is serving the one who is the boss. The soul is our servant. If the spirit is the boss then the soul obeys the spirit. If we let the flesh rule, then the soul follows the flesh.
We are a trinity of man in one. We may be separated from God. To return to Him is not on our terms but His. It is God who controls it. We just make the decision, by free will.

I am thankful for your explanation. I've seen so many diagrams online, trying to figure out the capacity of the spirit, soul and flesh. We know the flesh wars against the spirit, so yes, the soul would succumb to either/or. Therefore, it makes sense that we are transformed by the renewing of our minds (soul), and we take every thought captive into obedience to the Spirit of God! Thank you for this! I will be more aware of the warfare, and checking up on my mind (will, emotions) and the Spirit/flesh.
Thank you for your visit Judah's Daughter. Recently I was invited by one pastor to discuss the matter, who mentioned that Lord said about “love the Lord God” and added mind, and strength to it. It is true, but Lord Jesus was talking about love and not about definition of man. Ref. Mat 22:37, Mark 12:30. We resolved the matter.

I wonder if heart and spirit then are the same? He renews our hearts and creates an upright or steadfast spirit in us, so perhaps they are connected. The soul and mind are separated in Matt 22:37 and Mark 12:30, but that doesn't mean they are separate? I know when I wrote my hub, it was difficult to figure this out based on scripture, but instead, I found out how very much we are created in His image and that Word of God discerns and ministers to each and every part of us perfectly and completely. Heart as a core of man is "human spirit". This is part He gave us. I do not like the term "human". Bible under term "heart" always means that invisible heart (spirit). It is not anatomical heart, we know and able to see. People in Lord Jesus time did not have idea about anatomical heart. The autopsies were forbidden.
When one get scared, she put hand on the chest, not on the head. Fear is "opossum" of faith. When someone forgets something she put hand on forehead (soul) memory bank.
Spirit (heart) is real man. Soul is our mental realm, where is mind, memory, will, decision making, central and peripheral nervous system, blood, they all are part and of course connected.
To know the truth and see what is from us or what is from God, only sword (scalpel) WORD can separate, then we know the truth. It is more for understanding what is the will of God.
Many ask me, should I move to other city? "I guess I should know will of God" they say. My answer is usual, if you take Lord with you go where you are comfortable. You will be blessed anywhere. But it is only little example. There are more serious decisions we have to make.

Very nice description. Soul is real man, me, Spirit is Gods breath, Holy Spirit is God. God speaks to mans Spirit, and the Sprit speaks to the Soul, Heart is the part of the soul,the heart is what Glorifies God. Love the Lord with your Heart Mind and Soul. I am not teaching denomination but Word of God. We are the spirit and live in the body. We possess the soul - living function. When God breathe to the nostril of Adam “neshamah” he became living soul. It is true that the word “neshamah” has many meaning, which includes spirit, soul, breath and more. But guess who is making dictionary? Man does. It was made before we understood difference between spirit and soul.
Soul is troublemaker. Our thinking is wrong, negative, connected to the flesh; this is why God gave us Word – sword to make discernment between spirit and soul. Heart is synonym of spirit. Intention of heart, spirit is important. It does not say intention of soul. We know what soul thinks.
When man dies disembodied spirits is released (plus soul). I never heard that evil spirits, demons are disembodied purely only souls. We have information about only evils spirits, since saved are in heaven and not floating around. God made the body from earth and gave us spirit from Himself. This is why we are alike Him or crated to His (Their) likeness (image). We are triune.

The man is the spirit (small “s”) and has a soul and lives in the body. Why then we are His image?
3John 1:2 Yes, prosperity is result of soul and body, intellect, success etc. For body is health. But soul prospers only when spirit is OK.
Mt 11:29 In that time was not available new birth. It was in fame of an Old Covenant. It is all about flesh and soul. Spirit of man was still dead (spiritually dead). See spirit never get tired. Only body and soul does. When God breath to the nostril of Adam He breath not only air and Adam’s lungs expanded and man started to breath. God is very practical, He has a dual system. Remember, that in the Jesus ministry New Covenant started only after resurrection. That time soul and body was functioning. Man's spirit was yet spiritually dead. This is why Jesus use language appropriate to existing man. Man's spirit existed, but was dead, in-cased.
When man - Adam sin he did not died physically. His spirit died. Death is separation from zoe life. His soul did not died, since he did not stop thinking. I use to think as you do, but I change the mind. It solved now many problem and I understand the scripture. I am not religious but believe.

Hi Vladimir. This is a great hub. I agree with you completely. I recently read a very interesting book called,'Dispensational Truth or God's Plan and Purpose for the Ages,' by Baptist Minister, Clarence Larkin (1850 - 1924).
In his book Pastor Larkin describes man as 'tripartate' or a 'trinity' made up of a body (soma), mind/soul (psyche), and spirit (neuma). He also believes that God is a Triune Being; and as we are made in the image of God - so to are humans tripartate. Mind / body / Spirit.
It was his postulation comparing the Holy Temple of God to the Trinity, and the triune nature of the make-up of humankind, that really struck me. Taking this concept even further than I had originally seen; he viewed the Tabernacle and Courtyard of God's Temple, as a type of the "three-fold nature of God and man."
We do know that "the human body has become the Temple of the Holy Spirit" (I Corinthians ch.3, vs.16,17).
He noted that the threefold nature of both God and man may be illustrated by the Tabernacle. It seems, at least in his mind (and I do believe his thoughts on this issue), that the Tabernacle's Courtyard represents the body (soma); and that the 'Holy Place' his mind/soul (psyche), and the 'Most Holy Place' or the 'Holy of Holies' - represents the Spirit (neuma).

There are two "school" try to understand God. One is as you know trinit... other unit... I would not argue since it bring nothing just strife. I say we cannot understand God by our little mind. We can only trust Him and love Him by our pneuma (ruah). This temple is great illustration. Lord said at the end about destroy the temple and build in three days. He did not talk just to say something. By the way there were three parts of temple.

I've heard people say the Lord lives in our spirit/heart and they say nothing can touch our spirit as it is perfect and protected by the Holy Spirit but if that's the case then and as you say the heart is the HQ of our spirit, then obviously they are wrong as my heart has definitely been wounded since being born again and been healed by Him I might add, praise God!
So that means our spirit can be wounded and not just our soul and body as some say, which kinda fits in nicely with my belief that we can lose our salvation if we don't guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus!

Inner man consists of invisible spirit and soul. They are also invisibly connected. There is no separation line. Sometimes we feel that our heart is wounded. But it is our soul is wounded and hurt. Separation is made by Word which is two edges sword. We medical people using scalpel to separate joint from bone-(marrow). I am preparing book: INNER HEALING, instead of spiritual healing.
You mentioned at the end minds which usually means spirit and soul. But... Bible says there is mind of soul and mind of spirit.
Walking in the spirit will avoid to walk in flesh and walk in victory. If one is hurt, walking in spirit refusing accepting hurting and man starts to rejoice. We will rejoice on purpose. Not sure I am clear enough.

The questions i ask is about. when your body dies with your spirit being separated from your body.
What happens to your Soul?
You say the soul stops to function!
Is the soul separated from the spirit at this stage ?
I read in Ezekiel the soul that sins dies.
If the soul is separated from the spirit does that mean the spirit returns to God and the soul is sent down to a place of torment?
What about the soul that does not Sin and Lives! Is that sent to temporary paradise and the spirit returns to God ?

Our body is our spacesuit. It is changeable often need to be repaired by technician call doctor. It is outer man.
Inner man is invisible and has two parts: Spirit and soul. They both separates themselves from body when body dies. Inner man does not die. The spirit is what we are. Soul is the servant (computer so to speak). It has memory bank, processor (thoughts), will, peripheral and central nervous system to communicate with internal or external man and the world outside. When rich man died, he remembered Moses, his brothers, Abraham, had feeling of thirst or temperature and so on. Inner man will leave down or up, depend if he is saved or not. Did I say it right?
Yes you have said right! So the soul stops its function with the outside world when it leaves this world. But the soul does not stop its function in the spiritual realm of temporary paradise or temporary torment. Christ preached to the spirits in Prison in this spiritual realm. So spirit and soul are ''Not Separate'' in this spiritual realm. Have i said right here ?
And the dust returns to the Ground where it came from and the spirit returns to God who gave it. eccl 12:7
Does this mean all spirits of men, Good and evil men their spirit return to God who gave it?

Somebody gave me these 2 scriptures to support his view that at death the soul and spirit are separate. Is he saying right ?

Joeoboy147. Hello. Not all spirits return to God. Like demons and Satan never did. It means that people who do not receive salvation as free gift of God via believe through Jesus they will not return to God. The Letters (as Peter) are talking to believers. See salvation of spirit is when man is born of God (Word). The salvation of soul (means) is different; those who are already saved must change their thinking. Sometimes our head is our enemy. Because those who are new creation (I call it) may walk in flesh or may walk in spirit (their spirit). I hope I am clear. Thanks for coming.
When we are born into this world we have our own human spirit which is me or you that is given to us by God. Our spirit emanates our soul as me or you. Our spirit communicates by Inspiring thoughts into the mind of our soul. So in a sense if you are not born of God (Word} by his Spirit being grafted into you spirit. You are walking by your own spirit through your own soul with your own body.
Would you say your own human mind in the soul communicates questions to yourself back to your own human spirit and your own spirit communicates back by inspiration to the mind of your soul?
I speculate that if the spirit emanates the mind of the soul then you have the mind of you own spirit which is yourself.
Although in one sense our spirit is alive. we are cut off from God. So in another sense our spirit is dead because it is not connected to God.
When we are born of God and our spirit is connected with the spirit of God. Is this when we are inspired through ''Intuition'' by the spirit of God ?
I can understand our own head can be our worst enemy because we have to distinguish between when we are being inspired by our own spirit or the spirit of God. Also you can have a deceiving evil spirit inspiring your mind. Then i ask can your own spirit deceive yourself?
when we die and pass over to the spiritual realm. God seems to be every where in this spiritual realm. I read in KJV Psalm 139:8 That if you go up to heaven or make your bed in hell God is there.
So in one sense we may not return to God but God is still there by you
I read in Judges 9:23 and 1 samuel 16:14 The Lord sending a evil spirit to come between people and sent a evil spirit to torment Saul.
So in One sense satan and and demons have left God but in another sense God uses satan and demons.

I do know that unborn spirit could deceive. But this is I said we cannot divide spirit and soul like doctor cannot see line between joint and bone marrow. This is why we need the sword (scalpel). From my understanding in Hebrew there is permissive tens and causative tens. When we read, God did something (“wrong”) it should be translated He allowed or permitted. I do not believe good God can do evil.
Back to spirit and soul: Born again spirit is reconnected to God and His Word. But there are two kind of recreated spirits: those who walk in flesh and who walk in the spirit (human spirit). Many who are walking in flesh are many times mistaken doctrinally.
Ruah Holy Spirit is everywhere. But He is not part of hell. When Jesus (spirit and soul) was in hell, HS was there. When Jesus prayed WORD to God (but separated from God by our sin), Holy Spirit assisted transmission to the Heaven. See God cannot hear sinners. It is known statement. Jesus never sin but had the same problem as he would sin.
Regarding Saul... God has for us protection I call it umbrella. It is His Word. If He remove umbrella, we get wet.

But it was not all the time. He grew as all we do. *** When man is born again he become new creation new man. People who are not in victory needing to be saved not in the spirit (they already are) but (as I said before) saved in their thinking (soulish realm). When they are saved in the soul the soul is leaning to the spirit. Spirit is boss and controlling the soul. Otherwise soul is prone to fallow the flesh. In this time it is easy to understand initial struggles of Paul. I am always watching if I am clear explaining.
Many think that straggler is between flesh and Holy Spirit. It is not so. If the Holy Spirit would fight it would be not war, but we will loose and bottle will be over.
Then Paul is teaching about spiritual people and carnal. I call carnal meat-heads. Ha.

The human spirit is corrupted by sin like the soul and body
I understand Your ''Whole spirit'' has to be sanctified.

Your human spirit can inspire wrong thoughts into the mind of the soul.
Hebrews 4:12 Shows the dividing of human spirit to discern these Inspired wrong thoughts that go into the mind of the soul.
This then leads to sanctification of the spirit!
Then sanctification of soul and body by division in the soul and division in the body.
When you are born again it means your human spirit is connected to the holy spirit and is alive to God by his holy spirit= To the inspired intuition of the holy spirit. Then the holy spirit goes through a process of regenerating your human spirit over time unto sanctification.
Along with your soul and body.
You seem to be saying when you are born again your human spirit is saved and fully sanctified and regenerated in a instant. So you can just simply trust the inspired thoughts that come from the human spirit going into the mind of your soul and just trust and be led by your human spirit because it been created new.

Not so as I understand writing above. Human spirit is born of God it was also predicted in the OT. After being born again man receive the fruit of the spirit Gal 5:22. God recreate man's spirit become at once. But soul may not be renewrd yet. It may need time. It depends where man in point is. If soul was taught differently by religion man soul has to be renewed. Rom 12:2.
The third phase is baptism in the Holy Spirit. Our spirit is container to receive.
Man's heart - spirit may be corrupted before new become. But after being new creation the soul (thinking) may be temporary in trouble. Again if the soul is not aligned with the Word of God man is not walking in the spirit he is flesh man, even born again. When man receives baptism with HS he may receive gifts of the Spirit. I Cor 12
Very important is not only to know Word in head, but to understand with heart.
I understand our thinking can come from the Mind of the Soul because as we grow we learn things that are stored in our human brain cells. So things are happening on a subconscious level that brings our thinking to our conscious level in the soul.
What about things happening on a spiritual level of our mind. Where the spiritual Mind by Intuition Inspires new information and knowledge into the mind of the Soul.
This can happen 3 ways
{A} by our own human spirit mind.
{B} by a evil spirit mind.
{C} by holy spirit mind.
If our human ''spirit'' mind was corrupted and contaminated by the fall and now before being born of God was capable of Inspiring ''NEW WRONG'' Information and Knowledge into the mind of the Soul.
What is stopping this from happening from our human spirit after being born of God ?
Plenty of examples have been shown of christians who have been born of God by regenerated human spirit. But went WRONG in their New human spirit inspired Thoughts into the mind of their soul. believing these are the inspiration of the thoughts of God given then by revelation.
David Koresh in wacko Texas is one example.
David Koresh did not question what he believed was his new born of God Human spirit was revealing to him. He Just simply trusted it was now the revealed voice of God Inspiring his soul.
Not to mention the many different doctrine denominations. Even when you have a denomination there seems to be reformed one appear.
Now if all these men born of God who started a new denomination can now simply trust their own regenerated human Spirit why all the divisions ?
If all these people know the word by head and Heresy is Just One of the words,
Why do they get deceived in their understanding of the Word heresy in the heart ?.
Heresy/false doctrine/by false teachers is Just as much a Sin as any other Sin.
If heresy is opposition to Christian Orthodox-ed teachings. Which group of Christians are truly teaching the truth ?

I will tell you what I understand and was revelaed to me.
We do have – I mean man two kind of mind (biblically):
Soulical mind
Spirit-heart mind
Then there is God’s mind, mind of Christ…
Then devil-eveil has his mind.
Subconscious mind, which we are not aware this, is possible property of soul. Even nor born of God has one as u said.
I see than “unborn again” man has the cement wall around the heart. He still retains some God’s qualities. I remember before I was born again I had some good part inside. But our body and soul was corrupted very much with the time. It may remain longer even man is new creation. This is why we have to renew our mind by the Word. I call it salvation of soul. Paul is talking about. Otherwise it would be discrepancy since some say born again is sudden act and our soul is saved while Paul is talking already to Christians, who were new creation. Therefore there is “salvation” of spirit (new spirit) and there is perhaps longer process salvation of soul. We may speed it up. The faith is coming by the Word of Christ. It is translated as God but in original is Christ (Christos-anointed One).
Yes as we said before (I think) people have soulical subconsciousness programmed by different teachings and religion and when keeping not rules people feeling guilty. It is best to seek the truth and we shall find it. . .
Yes wrong teaching has great influence on man. How to correct it? Seeking for the trut! We have to allow to bear plenty fruit and the same time let Holy Spirit granted to us the gifts. The fruit is however evidence of being new creation. It cannot be faked by devil. But spirit gifts are for ministry. For example gift of healing should be evenjelization tools, besides practical help who are sick.
I personalyy feel man of faith does not need evidence, he has the faith. Perhaps for him the faith is make stronger, but again increase faith comes by Word (remember mustard seed parable?).
David Koresh was I think Seven Day Adventist. The same time he believed American way that we should be free. It was not wrong this way. But this denomination was operating as many others on the Law. But we are not under the Law but under the Grace.

I believe positive way that we will grow in the Word and spirit and we may avoid errors and live in the victory. Have nice night.
